Blog Post 3 - Nathan Sanborn

I think the copyright conversation in a classroom setting is interesting. I remember when I went to elementary/middle school, a lot of teachers wouldn't create their own assignments. This one platform called Teachers Pay Teachers allows teachers to pay each other for class resources. Although I do see the purpose behind this, I feel like it's best to develop your own material as well; that's your job! I also feel like if you truly know the subject, you should be able to create your own material. When it comes to students, it's important in this day and age to just educate students on these issues. They're going to be creating their own works for a grade, and if they want to do stuff with it outside of school, as long as they understand basic copyright use, I think it'd be fine. I had a pretty good idea of what copyright and fair use were before this, however, it's interesting to know how many different types there are. I do wonder how AI is going to play a part in copyright. AI is already able to strike down videos on YouTube they deem to break fair use.

On the topic of AI, I believe academic dishonesty is going to be a major topic in the upcoming years. Although schools are already implementing measures to prevent use of AI, I think its only going to get smarter, making it easier for anyone to bypass any protective measures. Because I think that AI is always going to be able to overcome whatever prevention we put into place, I believe the solution is to educate students on what they are losing out on from not taking their classes seriously. I know you could argue that this isn't going to stop kids from cheating, but in the end, people are ALWAYS going to find a way to cheat. Because of that, I just believe issue is spreading awareness that these kids are missing out on the education that is preparing them to critically think for themselves. Whether it be school functions, or per classroom, anything can help. I appreciate what my history teacher does. For every single topic, he discusses why its important to learn this part of history, and how it will help us understand other parts of history.

When it came to the newsletter assignment, it was honestly a struggle. I'm certified in multiple design based platforms, and MS Word is just not meant for designing things like that. I don't believe I would ever use it again for something like that, however, it did show me that if you just keep messing around with a design, you can make it work. I think my colors stuck out, however it looked a bit goofy, so I would redo that part. I also think the way I did the boxes were a bit tacky, and weren't that professional looking. I think its important in today's world to be able to design things yourself, it just saves you a lot of money. Whether its as a teacher and I'm designing a newsletter for the class, or in another job, I think just having more experience designing something always helps.
